Videocity x REX Box: Simply Nature – Bis zur Illusion
Screening: 02. May — 05. June 2024
Kassenhaus des Kino REX Bern, Schwanengasse 9, 3011 Bern
Humans live in nature, move in nature, influence nature and are ultimately part of nature. In their works the artists refer to the mutual interactions between humans and nature and explore the interplay that arises from this interdependence. The works thematise the present and what came prior, but at the same time deal with an illusory future, in which humans and nature merge into one being that exists in symbiosis. A critical alienation of now, towards a speculative form of what could be.
The video works in the "Until Illusion" exhibition show clever manipulations of snapshots and encourage viewers to engage with their own environment to recognise the challenge of a future in which Simply Nature is no longer just simple, but always inclusive of humans.

Let the Grassroots Grow: Simply Nature
02. May — 31. May 2024
Runde Ecke, riesa efau – Kultur Forum Dresden, Adlergasse 12 / Ecke Wachsbleichstrasse, 01067 Dresden
The exhibition "Let the Grass Roots Grow" at the Runder Ecke is the beginning of this multi-part programme, which focuses on an exchange between the video scenes in Dresden and London. We focus on exploring communities – those from the immediate neighbourhood or those of an international art wolrd – through the garden or greespace. We want to find out to what extent urban natural zones serve ecological activities, the development of ideas and culture and the encounter of different people. Or in other words: what role does nature play for city dwellers? The topic was inspired by initiatives at SET and riesa efau that green their neighbourhoods, taking steps in everyday life to protect the climate and foster sustainability.
Let the Grassroots Grow was initiated by Videocity together with the host organisation riesa efau and the British partner SET. All organisations share the much-vaunted "grassroots" ethos - a grassroots democratic attitude and personal initiative. Both combine art and society.
The current programme builds on last year's exchange with mutual visits were accompanied by digital research. We were able to get to know each other, learn from each other and research artists on-site. The current exhibition shows works by artists that the teams encountered during their research or via the yearly Videocity open call. The focus is on young talent and discoveries. Three artists from Dresden and three from England, including a duo collaborating between Germany and the UK, are taking part. The videos are selected in relation to the location, reflecting green spaces and the visual experiences of passers-by.
For us, bringing together video art scenes from two different regions constitutes an important gesture. Thanks to the intangible quality of video art, which enables its dissemination beyond city boundaries, we will share the results with different audiences in Dresden and London and stimulate an international discussion. We believe that many are facing similar challenges in the wake of the climate crisis.
Artists: Lisa Maria Baier, Adonia Bouchehri, Nick Crowe & Ian Rawlinson, Leon Michel, Abi Palmer, Veronika Pfaffinger.

Videoart at Midnight #141: John Miller
Screening: 17. May — 17. May 2024
BABYLON, big cinema hall, Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. 30, Berlin
Friday, 17 May 2024, 24:00 | Midnight
Eintritt frei | admission free
In his extensive and multi-layered oeuvre, John Miller repeatedly counteracts the longings of Western consumer society. With his eclectic approach and his skeptical as well as ironic artistic strategy, he explores the autonomy of the work of art while examining the myth of artistic genius. The result is an intelligent and humorous commentary on identity, economy, culture and socio-political issues constantly questioning established values.
John Miller's program for Videoart at Midnight will feature Tracking (2023), a filmic essay about tracking in various forms, which include hunting, surveillance, and cinema. It juxtaposes these with dream narratives. Augmenting Tracking will be Miller's mannequin videos as well as collaborations with Richard Hoeck and Takuji Kogo.

Videocity x Cargo Ship Lorin x Rhine Cities 2024
01. June — 30. October 2024
Basel, Strasbourg, Cologne, Duisburg, Amsterdam, Rotterdam
2 Videocity-Compilers interpreted by several musicians:
Eye-View & Utopia: Ukraine
After the start of the war in Ukraine in spring 2022, the Videocity team was corresponding with Ukrainian artists. From our exchange, we learned that we can help by giving their works a presence in the art world. So, we showed Ukrainian video art in Basel and Bern, followed by exhibitions in other towns.
As the war continues, we believe it is important to show Ukrainian artists‘ videos as often as possible in order to share their perspectives and to stand by their side.

Women from Iran
Iranian contemporary art is rarely shown in Europe. Curator Zahira Mozafari focuses on the work of two young women who live in Tehran, where they exhibit in galleries and at international film festivals, but have never been shown in the cities on the banks of the Rhine. What is special is that the two artists live in Tehran and critically reflect on global issues such as environmental pollution and the status of women in their short videos.

Live and die. How time passes and nobody can stop the process of evolution. This has a calming effect on me, and I continue to observe, as I am part of this eternal process beyond our concept of time and space. Existence in the material sense is limited, it has a beginning and an end and becomes circular. This reflects eternity, the timeless, in a circle. In the climatic water cycle.
Nature is evolution, constant change in flux, a chaotic coming and going that I perhaps also perceive in my surroundings and can thus establish a connection. In this way, art arises directly from personal experiences, spontaneously and subsequently thought through, and hopefully integrated into the whole that carries us forward. Inspiration rises from the unconscious to the light. Water creates connections and always finds its way. We know that water is life, the primordial soup from which we crawled onto land, the human being, one of an infinite number of life forms. We differentiate between the various levels, turn everything upside down out of curiosity and gain insights through changing perspectives. Our life is a journey of discovery, whether we realise it or not. And sometimes we experience the ‘aha’ moment and feel insightful, preferably excited and fulfilled. But sometimes we also feel disillusioned and dismayed.
Humour always helps. What is important or unimportant? To not interrupt the flow, it's better to play a trick on the overbearing.

VIDEONALE.20
Festival: 11. April — 18. May 2025
Kunstmuseum Bonn
The Videonale – Festival for Video and Time-Based Arts is celebrating its 20th edition from April 11 to May 18, 2025 (Opening: April 10 / Opening Days: April 11 – 13, 2025).
The Videonale has taken place since 2005 in the Kunstmuseum Bonn as a place for the presentation and mediation of art, with its specific architecture and its points of reference relating to content; an environment that challenges us again and again in a positive sense and poses questions of how we ourselves would like to act at this place: what new solutions for the presentation of audiovisual art, both scenographic and artistic, can be developed in relation to the spatial circumstances of this location? How do we as a festival wish to shape encounters with audiovisual art here? How can we make the museum space more permeable and create new contact zones between works, artists, and a diverse public? What new interrelationships can we produce between the museum and the surrounding urban environs? In this, we are guided by our deep conviction that the varied and current themes, aesthetics, and work methods of audiovisual art can serve as an invitation for many to interact with this artform and its content at entirely distinct levels.
Once again for VIDEONALE.20, the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bonn will be the starting point of the festival happenings. It will be expanded upon during its six-week duration through permanent and temporary satellites in the city.
